After years of near silence from pop’s most enigmatic voice, Lorde returns with a body of work that is raw intimate and unflinching.
Arriving on June 27 Virgin marks the fourth studio album from Grammy Award-winning artist and her first since 2021’s Solar Power. Released via Universal Music New Zealand and Republic Records the record signals a striking reinvention for one of modern pop’s most distinctive storytellers.
Lorde first rose to global prominence in 2013 with the release of Royals a minimalist electropop anthem that earned her two Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. The success of her debut album Pure Heroine launched the New Zealand native into international acclaim garnering multiple Billboard Music Awards, a BRIT Award and an MTV Video Music Award.
A RAW AND INTIMATE EVOLUTION
Virgin represents a significant evolution in Lorde's artistry, delving deep into themes of identity, femininity, and personal transformation. Described by the artist as “100% written in blood,” the album reflects a period of profound self-examination and growth. Lorde has characterised the album's aesthetic as “clear, like bathwater, windows, ice, spit," It emphasises a state of "full transparency" , whilst showcasing "unfiltered honesty".
Musically, Virgin turns away from the golden haze of Solar Power and the baroque grandeur of Melodrama, embracing instead a sparse and tactile palette built on piano, organic percussion, and raw texture. The album was co-produced by Lorde and Jim-E Stack, with contributions from Daniel Nigro, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, and Devonté Hynes.
First Glimpse at the World of 'Virgin'
The album’s rollout began with three singles that offer a striking glimpse into its emotional and thematic terrain. “What Was That,” released on April 24, sets a haunting tone with its exploration of self and memory. “Man of the Year,” which followed on May 29, confronts gender roles and shifting identity with sharp precision. Most recently, “Hammer,” released on June 20, captures the album’s raw physicality and urgency, what Lorde calls “an ode to city life and horniness.”
In support of Virgin, Lorde will embark on the Ultrasound World Tour, beginning on September 17, 2025, in Austin, Texas, and concluding on December 17, 2025, in Brooklyn, New York. The tour will feature opening acts such as Blood Orange, Chanel Beads, Empress Of, the Japanese House, Jim-E Stack, Oklou, and Nilüfer Yanya.
